East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Winnie Odinga says she is yet to decide whether she will support President William Ruto’s bid for re-election in the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview, Winnie further said the decision on whether ODM will support Ruto or field its own presidential candidate would ultimately be determined by the party membership through the National Delegates Convention (NDC).

Asked whether she would support Ruto in 2027, Winnie said the matter was a difficult one and that she had not made up her mind.

“That is a very hot question to ask in positions like this but I have not decided,” she said.

Winnie also said she did not believe ODM had made a final decision on whether it would field a presidential candidate in the next election, noting that the party’s structures would have to guide the way forward.

“I also do not believe ODM has decided to field a presidential candidate in 2027. We will have a National Delegates Convention which will happen later this year and it is where such decisions will be made,” she said.

The daughter of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, Winnie said party members should be given an opportunity to determine the direction of ODM, warning against decisions being driven by a few individuals.

“The party needs to let the people decide and listen to what supporters want,” Winnie said.

She claimed that some individuals within the party were prioritising personal political interests over the wishes of ODM supporters.

“There is a lot of briefcase carrying and people are looking for self-survival, and there the will of the people may not be a priority,” she said, adding that members wanted an opportunity to make a choice.

On whether her father would have contested the presidency in 2027 had he been alive, Winnie said there was a possibility that Raila would have entered the race despite his political cooperation with Ruto under the broad-based government arrangement.

She argued that the current situation in the country, including public dissatisfaction, slow development and other challenges, could have influenced her father’s decision to seek the presidency again.

“If you look at today and the dissatisfaction of people, slow development, he may possibly have joined the race,” she said.

However, Winnie clarified that her remarks did not mean Ruto was not performing, but rather that more could be done to address the concerns of Kenyans.

On the possibility of ODM endorsing Ruto’s re-election bid, Winnie said the decision belonged to the party and its members.

“On endorsing Ruto, it is the ODM members who will decide. I cannot speak for all members, and that is where the NDC comes in,” she said.
