IEBC responds to UDA SG Hassan Omar’s dead voters remarks
The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) dismissed claims by UDA Secretary General Hassan Omar that the dead will vote in the 2027 General Election.
In a statement issued by IEBC Commissioner Alutalala Mukhwana on Monday, September 14, he stated that a lifeless individual couldn’t vote.
Mukhwana added that the IEBC system uses identification and verification features which only grant access to living beings.
“The machines we have rely on biometrics such as fingerprints and iris. So how can a dead person register as a voter or even vote?”He posed.
The Commissioner clapped back at Hassan and warned other politicians against making reckless statements to undermine the electoral commission’s credibility.
“Politicians must exercise caution because we are tired of the statements that are hateful and erode public trust in IEBC. They have crossed the line,” Mukhwana declared.

Hassan stired controversy in Mombasa after he declared that in 2027, he would mobilise even the dead to cast votes in favour for President William Ruto.
He sensationally claimed that the thumbs of the dead would be used to bypass the fingerprint verification and vote, before they are layed to rest.
Commissioner Mukhwana’s caution came barely a month after IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon raised an alarm over consistent rhetoric in political circles claiming the Commission was compromised.
Politicians in the United Opposition claimed that the Commission erred in awarding the procurement tender for the purchase of an electoral system, while those in government asserted they would win the election even if it meant manipulating the results.
Ethekon maintained that IEBC would execute its mandate in accordance with the Constitution. He added that politicians and the media pushing the narrative risk damaging the public trust in the electoral commission.
“Unfortunately, even our media reports without fact-checking. We need to fact-check these wild allegations that are clearly calculated to create in the minds of Kenyans an idea that the elections are not going to be fair.
