Mama Ida Odinga on Thursday, September 17, revealed that several public and private institutions had planned to establish institutions to honour the late Raila Odinga.

Speaking to the press at Capitol Hill, Mama Ida Odinga revealed that the University of Nairobi is establishing the Raila Centre for Democracy, which will be launched this month.

She added that Daystar University had begun planning an elaborate symposium in the late Raila’s memory and in celebration.

“We are profoundly grateful for the diplomatic and academic honours being extended in his memory across national institutions,” Mam Ida reiterated.

Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Environment Programme further disclosed that the Kenya School of Government has established an academy in honour of the departed former ODM Party Leader.

“The Kenya School of Government has established the Raila Odinga Regional Leadership Academy, designated as a centre of excellence to foster diligent governance practices, public sector leadership, and public administration studies,” she stated.

Mama Ida stated that the first anniversary of Raila’s passing is dedicated to all Kenyans, adding that his legacy belonged to everyone who believes in democracy, justice and peace, including those of different political viewpoints.

She announced that the family had instituted a national steering committee which will guide all the commemorative activities, events and institutional initiatives regarding the celebrations.

Mama Idah said Prof Adams Oloo will chair the committee and will be assisted by two vice chairpersons, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo and Joe Ager.

She made it clear that the celebrations did not belong to the committee, but to the people. She acknowledged did not have an opportunity to mourn him as they wished.

Earlier, the Odinga family said anyone wishing to participate in, support or organise activities as part of the anniversary commemorations should do so through the committee to ensure proper coordination.

The ODM Party also announced a month-long commemoration dubbed ‘Mwezi wa Baba’ to mark one year since the passing of Raila.
