Raila Odinga won the 2022 election with 53.6%; Matiang’i reveals
Jubilee Party leader Fred Matiang’i has said the Azimio La Umoja side received information from its election agents indicating that the late Raila Odinga had secured 53.6% of the presidential vote in the 2022 General Election.
Speaking during an interview with Msenangu FM on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, Matiang’i revisited events surrounding the closely contested election, saying there were details about the exercise that he hopes can be discussed more openly in the future.
“Hii mambo ya uchaguzi wa 2022, niseme tu ukweli… naomba wakati mmoja Mwenyezi Mungu atatupea nafasi ya kueleza yale kila mtu anajua,” Matiang’i said.
Matiang’i said information available to the Azimio camp after voting indicated that Raila had crossed the 50% threshold required to win the presidency.
“Yale mimi najua ni kwamba, baada ya uchaguzi wa 2022… wale walituambia… Raila ako na 53.6%, which means alikuwa ameshinda uchaguzi,” he said.
According to Matiang’i, they then waited for the official declaration of the presidential result.
“Sasa tukangoja atangazwe,” he added.
He said election monitoring and exit polling had previously provided information that closely reflected eventual results, including during by-elections.
“Hata tukiwa na by-election, hata kama ya councillor, tunatumia hizi agencies kufanya kile kitu tunaita exit polling. Yaani watu wamepiga kura namna gani,” Matiang’i said.
He added that such information had, in his experience, been highly accurate.
“Every time walitupea exit polling, it was accurate almost to a decimal place,” he said.

Matiang’i also referred to the divisions that emerged within the electoral commission shortly before the presidential results were announced.
Jubilee Interim Party Leader Fred
“Unajua ukiona uchaguzi, there are seven commissioners of IEBC, sawasawa? Wanne wamekataa hiyo result kutangazwa. Wale wametangaza results ni watatu,” he said.
The four commissioners publicly distanced themselves from the final presidential results announced by then-IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati.
The officially declared result gave William Ruto 50.49% of the vote against Raila’s 48.85%. Raila subsequently challenged the outcome at the Supreme Court, which upheld Ruto’s election.
Matiang’i said some details about his time in the security docket remain restricted by confidentiality requirements.
“Ukiwa Waziri wa Usalama lazima pia you are bound by the Official Secrets Act,” he said.
His 53.6% figure therefore represents the information he says was available to the Azimio side during the election period, rather than the official result declared by IEBC and upheld by the Supreme Court.
