Russian Embassy announces 70 fully-funded scholarships for Kenyan students
The Russian Embassy in Kenya has announced 70 fully funded scholarships for Kenyan students seeking to pursue higher education in Russia, adding that it is open to increasing the allocation following a request from the Kenyan government.
Dmitriy Charnetskiy, a counsellor at the Russian Embassy in Kenya, announced the scholarships during a luncheon welcoming 30 Kenyan youths who had returned from a seven-day international engagement in Russia.
Charnetskiy said the programme would build on the longstanding educational ties between Kenya and Russia, where generations of Kenyan professionals have received university training.
“This initiative provides Kenyans with an opportunity to access the high-quality education that Russia offers across various fields. Many doctors and engineers in Kenya received their training at Russian universities, including institutions in the former Soviet Union. We are committed to building on this legacy and creating more opportunities for the next generation,” he said.
The embassy is also in discussions with Kenya’s Ministry of Education and Ministry of Youth on a proposed agreement for the mutual recognition of educational documents between the two countries.
According to Charnetskiy, the agreement would ease access to educational opportunities and facilitate academic exchanges involving students, lecturers and teachers from Kenya and Russia.

The scholarship announcement followed the participation of the 30 Kenyan youths in the International Youth Festival held in Yekaterinburg, Russia, which brought together approximately 10,000 young people from more than 190 countries.
Held under the theme “Follow Your Dream—Together with Russia,” the festival provided a platform for participants to exchange ideas and engage in discussions on leadership, innovation, education and sustainable development.
The Kenyan delegation’s participation was facilitated through a partnership involving the International Digital Platform (IDP), the International Humanitarian Corps (IHC) of Russia, the Russian Embassy in Kenya, TUUA Safaris, ANO Nizhny Novgorod Centre for Cooperation with the Global South and other partners.
During the seven-day programme, the participants attended forums, workshops and cultural exchange sessions and interacted with young people from different countries. They also observed electoral processes in six Russian regions, an experience they said offered perspectives on election administration and governance that could inform discussions in Kenya.
Dominic David Mmazi, country director of IDP Advisory Solutions in Kenya, said the organisation would continue working with partners to expand young people’s access to international learning opportunities.
