Early morning fire engulfs multi-storey apartment building in Ongata Rongai
Panic and confusion erupted at the Mbagathi Greens Estate in Ongata Rongai as a fire broke out at one of the apartment buildings on the morning of Tuesday, October 27.
Residents scampered for safety as a huge fire engulfed a multi-storey apartment building located behind Maasai Mall.
Footage of the building shows the fire raging through the top floors of one of the apartment buildings while spreading to the lower floors, with thick, dark smoke engulfing the atmosphere.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established, nor have the casualties from the incident been confirmed.
Further analysis of the footage shows the entire rooftop of the building having been ripped off completely, though the fire did not manage to spread to the neighbouring buildings, which are close enough.

As of the time of the publication of this story, the fire had been put out, with reports indicating that water bowsers came in to suppress the situation, though only after some hours.
Witness accounts were also heard blaming the county for handling the situation, expressing frustration over the lateness of firefighters, stressing increased negligence from the county’s Disaster Management and Coordination department.
“I am afraid that this fire might destroy the whole building even before the fire department arrives. Nairobi County’s handling is in the pits, always late in every emergency situation,” stated one witness.
Additionally, the extent of the damage to the building and the property inside is also yet to be determined.
Authorities have also not released a formal statement since the incident occurred.
The incident just adds to the growing list of similar incidents experienced in Rongai, with October alone seeing several houses in Rongai’s Bangladesh slum torched during protests by Multimedia University students following an alleged attack on one of their colleagues.
