Borussia Dortmund, one of Germany’s most prominent football clubs, has become entangled in a widening scandal following new claims of historical sexual abuse involving a former employee. The formal complaints have been lodged in the recent past against the unnamed man as a police in Hagen, a town near Dortmund confirmed.

According to a spokesperson of the Hagen police, the police are investigating the matter following several people coming out with claims against the former employee. The allegations have come up following a report by Bild newspaper that revealed that the alleged misconduct had been an internal issue that was long held.

At the beginning of the month, Borussia Dortmund was publicly demanding anyone who had information on sexual abuse at the club to speak up. This was after Bild revealed a letter by a lawyer and a five-page dossier which dated back to 2010.

The documents allegedly had an accusation of a youth player, who stated that the former manager attached professional opportunities with sexual favours, not to mention improper touching and attempted kissing.

To this the Bundesliga club issued a statement admitting that it had been complaining about the same person in 2010 and 2023. The statement said that the person had been fired on a minor position and that he had made sure that he was out of the club.

The club also indicated that the latest complaint incorporated the incidences that were not within the organization and the accused had refuted them.

Bild has since recorded that it has interviewed eight people who say that they have been the victim of the same man, including former fans, young players, and even neighbours. The youngest reported victim was a 11 year old. The abuse is alleged to have taken place a few decades ago.

Borussia Dortmund has told AFP that it has contracted an external investigation team to deal with the situation on its own. The club stated that it has commissioned outside investigators to investigate the allegations and will give them any avenue it has.

The club also reiterated its dedication to transparency and helping those who have been abused by offering information to any who has such. Dortmund also added, Use the whistleblowing systems to all victims of interpersonal and sexual violence and any person who has the ability to report about incidences of such violence.

The exposures have rocked the German football as it casts doubts on how historical instances of abuse are being handled in big football clubs and how well they are equipped to guard young players. With ongoing investigation, Borussia Dortmund is under close attention after its former actions and its reaction to the shocking accusations at the moment.
