DCP has no place in Azimio and won’t join the coalition; MP Gakuya

The Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) has ruled out joining what it described as a revived Azimio coalition, dismissing efforts by Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to re-engage the party as opposition leaders continue consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking during an interview on TV47, Embakasi North MP James Gakuya said DCP would not be part of Azimio under any circumstances, insisting the party’s future lies elsewhere.

“Personally, and the whole fraternity of DCP, we have no space in Azimio. Even going forward, we cannot recognise it at all,” Gakuya said.

“If we are going to make any formation going forward, it should not be Azimio at all. That one we are going to reject in totality.”

The lawmaker said DCP would not allow itself to be drawn back into what he described as an outdated political arrangement.

“We cannot allow ourselves to be fixed to that particular cocoon. As DCP, we cannot even dare to be part of Azimio on a single day,” he said.

His remarks came a day after Kalonzo disclosed that Azimio had begun engaging several political parties and leaders as it seeks to expand and reorganise ahead of the next General Election.

Speaking after an Azimio meeting on Monday, Kalonzo said the coalition had mandated its leadership to reach out to like-minded political parties, arguing that preparations for the 2027 elections were already underway.

“We are talking to Democracy for Citizens Party. We’re also re-engaging with PLP,” Kalonzo said.

He added that Azimio was also engaging former Chief Justice David Maraga, who has expressed interest in working with the coalition, while welcoming efforts by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi movement to register as a political party.

Gakuya, however, questioned the practicality of reviving Azimio, particularly following ODM’s political cooperation with the current administration.

He said it was unclear which faction of ODM Azimio intended to bring back into the coalition.

“The other big question is that we have a big battle in ODM. Which ODM are you bringing back to Azimio? The Oburu ODM faction or the young Turks faction?” he posed.

He suggested that leaders associated with the younger faction of ODM should instead join the broader United Opposition alliance independently rather than through Azimio.

“If the idea is to bring this young team to Azimio, why can’t this young team look for an entity and join the bigger fraternity of the United Opposition as an entity? We can’t buy that idea,” he said.

The remarks underscore differences within the opposition over the political vehicle that will carry its challenge against President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
