Questions have emerged over the death of a middle-aged man who died while in custody at Kilungu Police Station, just hours after his arrest at Nunguni Market in Makueni County.

Gedion Makau was arrested on Tuesday evening at his business premises in Nunguni Shopping Centre on allegations that he was in possession of a panga. He was later detained at Kilungu Police Station.

His family revealed that they only learnt of his death the following day after receiving information from a friend that his body had been taken to Kilungu Sub County Hospital Mortuary by police.

According to the family, police later asked them to report to the station, where they were informed that Makau had allegedly died by suicide after using his trousers while inside the police cells.

His relatives have questioned why the body was taken to the mortuary before they were informed of his death.

Makau’s mother, Teresia Mbandi, and his wife, Pauline Gedion, have cast doubt over the police narrative, calling for an independent probe.

Kilungu Ward MCA Joseph Mbindyo stated that the incident is part of a worrying trend of deaths occurring in police custody, adding that those found responsible for negligence should be held accountable.

The body of Gedion Makau is lying at Kilungu Sub County Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death, as investigations into the incident continue.
