There was no call from Gachagua to fire Trevor Ombija; Linus Kaikai

Group Editorial and Strategy Director at Royal Media Services (RMS) Linus Kaikai has denied claims that former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua sought the dismissal of journalist Trevor Ombija following a heated television interview between the two earlier this year.

Kaikai said there was no such call from Gachagua, adding that Ombija had since acknowledged that his remarks were a mistake and expressed regret over making them.

“I have asked Trevor about the remarks, and he says it is ‘a mistake and I regret it’,” Kaikai said.

Kaikai was responding to a post by a media house reporting that Ombija, who is also a Nyakach parliamentary aspirant, had claimed Gachagua made calls seeking to have him fired from Royal Media Services.

“This is not true. There was no such call from former DP Gachagua. Such a call would in any case not be worthwhile at RMS,” Kaikai said.

Kaikai added that Ombija told him he “didn’t think the remarks would be picked up”.

Gachagua’s Democratic Party (DCP), which he leads, also responded to the controversy, saying Ombija’s remarks were politically motivated.

The party claimed that invoking Gachagua’s or the Mt Kenya community’s name negatively was a way for some politicians to gain political support.

DCP also questioned Ombija’s explanation that the remarks were a mistake, saying it believed the remarks were deliberate.

The party further criticised Ombija’s political ambitions ahead of the 2027 General Election and referred to his bid for the Nyakach parliamentary seat.

Gachagua is currently in the United States, where he is visiting different states and holding meetings with Kenyans in the diaspora.
