Ruto plans to sign Ksh8.2 trillion U.S. minerals deal; Gachagua claims

Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has alleged that President William Ruto is set to sign a Ksh8.2 trillion minerals deal with an American company during his ongoing visit to the United States.

Speaking to Kenyans living in the diaspora on Saturday, September 19, Gachagua claimed Ruto’s U.S. trip would include discussions on Kenya’s mineral resources and a proposed partnership with American investors.

Gachagua said Ruto’s attendance at the 81st United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) was only part of his wider engagements in the US.

“William Ruto is in the air on his way to New York for the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA. But that is not his mission. That is just a camouflage. He will go there, take a few pictures, give a few speeches, and meet a few presidents and others,” Gachagua stated.

Gachagua alleged that Ruto would use his U.S. trip to finalise an agreement with an American company over the exploitation of Kenya’s mineral deposits.

“His real mission in the United States is to come and seal a deal with Americans on how niobium will be exploited from Kenya,” Gachagua said.

The former Deputy President further claimed the deal could involve minerals valued at Ksh8.2 trillion, alleging that Kenya would receive little from their exploitation and that the proceeds would instead be shared between Ruto and the American company involved.

The proposed partnership centres on the Mrima Hill deposits in Kwale County, which contain niobium and rare earth minerals. Kenya is currently evaluating bids from companies seeking to develop the deposits, while the US has expressed interest in supporting the country’s critical-minerals sector.

Gachagua also claimed that officials from the American company visited Kenya about four weeks ago and signed an agreement with a person he described as Ruto’s proxy.

He alleged that Ruto was now travelling to the US to meet the Americans and conclude what he described as the final stage of the arrangement.

Gachagua made the allegations while discussing Ruto’s planned attendance at the 81st United Nations General Assembly in New York.

His claims come as Kenya and the U.S. pursue closer cooperation on critical minerals, with Washington supporting the development of local processing and value addition.

U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Frank Garcia, on Wednesday, September 9, said American companies were ready to partner with Kenya in processing its minerals locally while creating jobs for residents.

The allegations come days after Gachagua accused President Ruto of having personal and commercial interests in the decision to force a foreign investor operating at Lake Magadi out of Kenya.
