Ruto has exceeded expectations in matters education; KNUT SG Collins Oyuu

Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT) Collins Oyuu, Secretary-General, has praised President William Ruto, saying he has exceeded expectations in matters of education, particularly in the employment of teachers.

Speaking during World Teachers’ Day celebrations at Kasarani on Monday, October 5, 2026, the KNUT Secretary-General cited the massive employment of teachers for the past 3 years, where more than 100,000 teachers had been employed on permanent and pensionable terms over the last three financial years.

“I did say, and I want to repeat here, that on matters of education, you have exceeded expectations. We talked about the employment of teachers in the past, with 5,000 teachers being employed annually. In the last three financial years, Your Excellency, more than 100,000 teachers have been employed on permanent and pensionable terms,” he said.

He said the increased recruitment of teachers marked a significant shift from previous years when the number of teachers employed annually was much lower.

The KNUT official commended the government for its efforts to address teacher shortages and improve conditions in the education sector.

This occurs 3 months after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced more than 54,000 teaching and promotion opportunities in one of its largest recruitment drives, targeting unemployed teachers and serving educators seeking career progression.

The vacancies include 20,000 permanent and pensionable positions for post-primary teachers to serve in junior schools and 34,016 promotion opportunities across various teaching and administrative grades.
