Maurice Ogeta, the longtime bodyguard of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has recounted his final moments with his employer in India
Maurice Ogeta, the longtime bodyguard of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, has recounted his final moments with his employer in India, where the veteran politician died on October 15, 2025.
In an interview on Friday, October 9, 2026, Ogeta described his close relationship with Raila and recalled an incident in India when he became concerned about the former prime minister’s health.
Ogeta said he was walking about a metre away from Raila when he noticed him struggling to continue walking.
“I think he went only a quarter way, walking slowly. Then he stopped. Remember I’m just a metre away,” Ogeta narrated.
He said Raila made a sound that prompted him to ask whether he was experiencing back pain or discomfort in his leg.
“When he made that kind of whatever noise, I asked him, Mzee, is it that back hurting or it’s your leg?” he recalled.
According to Ogeta, Raila appeared dazed and seemed to be looking at something without seeing it clearly.
He said he offered to help the former prime minister to a nearby chair so he could establish what was troubling him.
“Then I said no, wacha nikupeleke pale kwa kiti so that I check it for you, you know. I wanted to see whether it is the back,” Ogeta said.

The account offered a glimpse into the close attention Ogeta paid to Raila’s well-being while serving as his bodyguard.
During the interview, Ogeta also recalled several occasions when he feared that Raila had been killed while he was protecting him.
He described the experiences as frightening, saying there was a point when he could picture his employer dead during violent confrontations.
One incident involved gunfire directed at Raila’s vehicle. Ogeta recalled an officer approaching the car’s windscreen and hitting it repeatedly until it cracked.
He said the vehicle’s tinted windows offered some protection from view, but the windscreen was damaged before more shots were fired at the car.
Ogeta also remembered the reaction of a commander travelling in the lead vehicle ahead of Raila’s car.
According to him, the commander exclaimed in Dholuo that the attackers had killed Raila.
The incident left a lasting impression on Ogeta, who said he had moments when he feared both he and his employer would die.
