There will be no Kikuyu in leadership for the next 30 years; Waiguru
Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has warned that the Agikuyu community could remain out of national leadership for the next 30 years, arguing that its political alignment with the opposition could limit its chances of returning to power.
Speaking to a group of residents from Mwea who visited her on Friday, October 10, 2026, the governor said the opposition was unlikely to win the next general election, citing what she described as President William Ruto’s broad support across the country.
“And I can tell you, for the next thirty years, there will be no Kikuyu in leadership. And I can tell you, because I can tell you without fear or favour, the opposition is not going to win. Na sisemi hivyo ati kwa sababu ya mapenzi. It’s a fact,” Waiguru said.
The governor claimed that Ruto had the backing of a majority of Kenya’s 47 counties, saying she had asked members of her team to analyse the political landscape.
“Out of 47 counties, nilifanya watu wangu wachukue kalamu na karatasi. Thirty-five counties are with William Ruto,” she said.
Waiguru further argued that the Kikuyu community should not assume that all votes cast in counties such as Nakuru, Kiambu and Nairobi belonged to the Mount Kenya region, noting that the areas had diverse political and ethnic interests.

She cited the 2022 presidential election, when former Prime Minister Raila Odinga received substantial support in parts of Mount Kenya, arguing that the voting patterns reflected the region’s political diversity.
The governor also questioned the opposition’s ability to unite ahead of the 2027 General Election, saying disagreements among leaders at the county level raised doubts about their capacity to form a cohesive national political alliance.
“You don’t need science to know hawatashikana. You don’t need to be a science expert. Kama watu wanashindwa kushikana kwa governor level, national ndiyo mtaweza?” she posed.
This comes at a time when former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has increasingly been embraced by sections of the Mount Kenya community, with some regarding him as their political spokesman.
Gachagua has repeatedly dismissed the possibility of the region voting for President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, accusing the Head of State of sidelining the mountain.
