Babu Owino changes tune on Sifuna support for presidency

Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has outlined a longer political timeline for his presidential ambitions, saying he would support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for two terms before seeking the country’s top seat himself.

Speaking during a meeting with the Linda Mwananchi women’s league on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Babu made the remarks as members surprised him with a birthday cake.

The legislator declared that his relationship with Sifuna would remain intact even if the senator served as president for 10 years before he pursued his own presidential ambitions.

“Sifuna akipata presidency 2027, aende two terms, by 2037, 10 years amemaliza. Kama hamkukuwa marafiki, uhusiano itakuwa imeisha,” Babu said.

He added that he would also want an opportunity to serve for two terms as president after Sifuna, suggesting that the two leaders could remain politically aligned for decades.

“Babu pia aende term zingine kama mbili, tena pia atafute presidency term mbili, ni kama it will be another 20 years. Kama hatukuwa tunajuana tena relationship itakuwa imeisha,” he added.

The MP further declared that he would stand by Sifuna even if challenges emerged during their political journey.

“Kama kutakuwa na shida, atakufa na mimi. Na bado sitaachana na yeye,” Babu said.

His remarks appeared to reinforce his commitment to Sifuna’s presidential ambitions while suggesting that he was prepared to postpone his own bid for the presidency.

The latest remarks mark a shift in the timeline Babu had previously outlined for his political future.

In August 2026, the Embakasi East MP said he intended to contest the Nairobi gubernatorial seat in the 2027 General Election, serve one term and then pursue the presidency in 2032.

Speaking during a radio interview, Babu argued that five years would be sufficient for him to transform Nairobi before moving to the national stage.

“I have already told you we have sat as leaders, and I have told them we are all leaders here. Do one term, as I also do one term as governor, then we look for the president. I personally will go for the presidency in 2032,” he said.
