At least five people lost their lives in a devastating road accident on Monday evening, October 27, when a lorry transporting molasses rammed into boda boda operators at Ichuni Junction along the busy Keroka–Masimba Road in Kisii County.
The evening calm at the usually bustling junction turned into chaos as the lorry veered off the road and ploughed through the waiting riders, leaving behind a scene of destruction and heartbreak.
Witnesses described the horrific moment as one filled with panic, screams, and confusion, as locals and motorists rushed to assist the victims trapped beneath the wreckage.
Twisted motorcycles, shattered helmets, and scattered personal belongings lined the blood-stained tarmac, a grim reflection of the magnitude of the impact.
The collision brought traffic to a standstill along the Keroka–Masimba stretch as police and rescue workers cordoned off the area to manage the situation and facilitate emergency operations.

How the Kisii Accident Happened
According to preliminary police reports, the lorry was heading towards Masimba when the driver reportedly lost control of the vehicle. The heavy truck, loaded with molasses, is said to have skidded off the road before slamming into several boda boda riders who were parked at the Ichuni Junction while waiting for passengers.
Kisii County Traffic Enforcement Officer, Richard Kipkemoi, confirmed the tragic incident and said that immediate rescue efforts were launched with the help of local residents and law enforcement officers. “The lorry driver lost control and veered off the road before hitting boda boda operators who were stationed by the roadside. Several victims were rushed to Keroka Sub-County Hospital for treatment,” Kipkemoi stated.
He further added that emergency response teams, including police and members of the public, worked tirelessly to retrieve survivors and recover bodies trapped beneath the mangled motorcycles.
Authorities confirmed that five people died on the spot, while several others sustained serious injuries. Some of the injured were transported to Keroka Sub-County Hospital, where they are receiving emergency medical care. Hospital officials reported that some victims are in critical condition, and efforts are underway to stabilize them.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Keroka Hospital mortuary pending identification by their families. Police have also launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the crash, with early reports pointing to possible brake failure or loss of control due to the heavy molasses load.
Witness Accounts
Eyewitnesses recounted the harrowing experience, describing it as one of the most tragic scenes witnessed in the area. “The truck was moving at a high speed when it suddenly veered off the road and crashed into the riders. People were screaming and running everywhere,” said one resident who joined in the rescue operation.
Others expressed frustration over the frequent accidents occurring along the Keroka–Masimba Road, urging authorities to implement stricter traffic regulations and improve road safety measures at the busy junction.
Traffic officials have since called on motorists to exercise caution, especially along the Keroka–Masimba route, which has recently recorded a rise in accidents involving both motorcycles and heavy commercial vehicles.
Officer Kipkemoi emphasized the importance of routine vehicle maintenance and adherence to speed limits to prevent further loss of lives.
“The safety of all road users depends on responsibility and vigilance. Drivers must ensure their vehicles are in good mechanical condition and avoid speeding, especially in densely populated areas,” he advised.
As the sun set on Monday, the Ichuni community was left grieving, with many families mourning loved ones and others anxiously waiting for news of the injured.
The tragedy has reignited calls for better enforcement of road safety laws and the establishment of speed bumps and warning signs at high-risk junctions such as Ichuni.
Authorities have assured the public that a full investigation is underway to establish the cause of the accident and to ensure that justice is served for the victims and their families.
