Kenya Mourns the Passing of Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga at 80

Breaking News-Kenya's Former Prime Minister Dies in India.

Kenya is mourning the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 80 in Kochi, India. Odinga, the longtime leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) and a resilient figure in Kenyan politics, was receiving treatment at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre.

According to reports from Indian media outlets Mathrubhumi and The Hindu, Odinga suffered a cardiac arrest during a morning walk at the hospital, where he had been undergoing specialized treatment for the past five days.

A hospital spokesperson told AFP that Odinga experienced breathing difficulties and collapsed around 7:45 a.m. Despite being rushed to a nearby private hospital, doctors were unable to revive him.

Police officials in India confirmed that the former Prime Minister was accompanied by his sister, daughter, personal doctor, and both Indian and Kenyan security officers at the time of the incident.

Born in 1945 in Maseno, Kisumu County, Raila Odinga was the son of Kenya’s first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga. Over the decades, Raila built his own formidable legacy — one defined by courage, perseverance, and an unwavering belief in democratic ideals.

Odinga’s political journey was as storied as it was turbulent. He was detained several times in the 1980s and 1990s for his opposition to the one-party rule, enduring years in prison without trial. Despite the hardships, he emerged as one of the leading figures in Kenya’s transition to multi-party democracy. His powerful voice and charisma made him both a national symbol of resistance and a rallying point for reform-minded Kenyans.

As leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), Raila contested several presidential elections — in 2007, 2013, 2017, and 2022 — each time shaping the national discourse and mobilizing millions of supporters. Although he never assumed the presidency, his influence on Kenya’s governance, policy reforms, and constitutional transformation was profound.

His tenure as Prime Minister between 2008 and 2013, following a power-sharing agreement after the disputed 2007 elections, remains one of the most pivotal chapters in Kenya’s recent political history.

During that period, Odinga oversaw key government reforms, infrastructural development, and the implementation of the 2010 Constitution, which decentralized power and strengthened democratic institutions.

Tributes have poured in from across the political spectrum and around the world.

President William Ruto led the nation in mourning, describing Odinga as “a statesman who dedicated his life to public service and the pursuit of a fairer, more democratic Kenya.”

Former President Uhuru Kenyatta lauded Odinga as “a patriot whose vision and sacrifices reshaped the country’s democratic landscape.”

Across social media platforms, Kenyans have shared heartfelt messages, remembering Odinga not only as a political icon but also as a father figure and a champion of the people. Flags are expected to fly at half-mast as the nation prepares for an official period of mourning.

Though Raila Odinga’s passing leaves a void in Kenya’s political and social life, his ideals and contributions will endure in the generations of leaders and citizens inspired by his tireless fight for justice and equality.
