Eldoret college director arrested for issuing forged certificates to students

A college director has been arrested by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) over allegations of issuing forged academic certificates to students. 

In a statement on Wednesday, August 5, the DCI identified the suspect as the director of Region Group College in Eldoret.

“Detectives from the DCI Headquarters have arrested the director of a college in Eldoret over allegations of issuing forged academic certificates that left an unsuspecting victim jobless,” the statement read.

According to the Directorate, he was apprehended following investigations launched after a complaint from the Public Service Commission (PSC).

The inquiry began during the authentication of academic and professional certificates submitted by a student as part of a job verification process. 

Detectives established that the suspect allegedly misrepresented the institution as being affiliated with Moi University to convince an unsuspecting student to enrol for a Diploma in Business Management. 

After completing the programme, the student received a diploma believed to be genuine and later presented it to an employer.

During the authentication exercise conducted by the PSC, the certificate was found to be a forgery, leading to the victim losing his job. 

Once investigations were concluded, detectives forwarded the case file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) where charges against the suspect were approved, including making a false document contrary to the Penal Code, alongside other offences. 

The DCI confirmed that the director was arrested in Eldoret Town and is being processed ahead of his court appearance.

As cases of forged academic certificates become increasingly common, the directorate urged Kenyans to confirm the accreditation and legitimacy of academic institutions before enrolling in any programme.

Additionally, members of the public have been encouraged to report any suspected cases of such fraud to the nearest police station or directly to the DCI.
