Eliud Kipchoge wins first marathon in 3 years in Melbourne, sets new record

Kenyan marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge has won his first marathon in three years after setting a new course record at the Nike Melbourne Marathon in Australia on Sunday, October 11.

Kipchoge clocked 2:09:10, beating the previous course record by two seconds to claim victory in the race.

The two-time Olympic champion last won a marathon in September 2023, when he triumphed at the Berlin Marathon in Germany.

His Melbourne victory ends a three-year wait for another marathon win as the world record holder adds another milestone to his illustrious career.

The Melbourne Marathon is part of his world tour, where he is attempting to run a marathon on all the continents.

The tour was launched in South Africa in May 2026 and has since been held on two continents, Africa and South America, in Brazil, with Melbourne being the third continent.

The 41-year-old said the tour will take two years and will cover all seven continents, excluding Antarctica.

During the Australian race, Australian Thomas Do Canto finished second at 2:10:35, while Reece Edwards came third at 2:14:33.

Before his Melbourne Marathon win, Kipchoge had participated in several races.

For instance, in 2024, he participated in the Tokyo Marathon, where he finished in 10th place in two hours, six minutes, and 50 seconds, and the Paris Olympic Games Marathon, which he did not finish.

In 2025, he participated in three major marathons: the London, Sydney, and New York City Marathons, where he finished sixth, ninth, 17th, and 17th, respectively.

In the first race of his world tour in Cape Town, Kpchoge finished in 16th place with a time of two hours, 13 minutes, 29 seconds.

In Brazil, at the Porto Alegre Marathon in July 2026, he finished in 12th place.
