Gachagua reveal why the Standard Group Editor Alex Kiprotich was abducted

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the leadership of the National Police Service (NPS) of failing to conduct credible investigations into the alleged abduction of Standard Media Group Associate Editor Alex Kiprotich.

In a strongly worded statement directed at Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, Gachagua questioned the decision to order investigations into Kiprotich’s disappearance, arguing that previous probes into alleged killings, attacks and incidents of violence had not yielded publicly known results.

“That investigation, like all the others you have ordered, will go nowhere because it was done by police officers outside your command,” Gachagua said on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

Gachagua alleged that the police service had effectively been taken over by Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo, with the alleged concurrence of President William Ruto.

He further claimed that instructions were being issued directly to senior police commanders, including Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat and DCI Director Mohamed Amin.

“You are just a flower girl leading a shell, and you will be sacrificed at the right time and blamed for the excesses in the Service,” Gachagua told Kanja.

Gachagua further alleged that Kiprotich had been preparing an investigative report concerning compensation payments to thousands of people evicted from the Mau Forest.

According to Gachagua, the journalist was preparing to publish an exposé detailing alleged financial irregularities in the compensation process, including claims that millions of shillings had been diverted through officials, brokers and proxies.

He alleged that a late-night meeting between President Ruto and Murkomen on Monday, September 1, 2026, preceded a decision to stop Kiprotich from publishing the report.

Gachagua also alleged that the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had placed Kiprotich under surveillance and accused a team allegedly coordinated by a retired police officer, Zachary Kariuki, of being involved in his abduction.

These allegations have not been independently established in the statement and would require verification by competent investigative authorities.
