IEBC clears Homa Bay deputy governor nominee for appointment

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has cleared Danish Onyango for appointment as the Homa Bay County Deputy Governor. 

In a gazette notice on Friday, August 7, IEBC Chairperson Erastus Ethekon said Onyango’s clearance for appointment followed a High Court Judgement delivered on July 30, 2026, which dismissed a petition that was challenging his nomination. 

According to Ethekon, the Homa Bay Deputy Governor nominee meets the constitutional requirements for the role. 

“The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission declares that the person listed in the Schedule hereunder meets the qualifications and requirements of the Constitution and the Elections Act, 2011 to be appointed as the Deputy County Governor Homa Bay County,” read the gazette notice in part. 

Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga appointed Onyango as her new deputy on March 17, 2026. 

In a statement, Governor Wanga said she nominated Onyango pursuant to the vacancy in the Office of the Deputy Governor and in compliance with the County Governments Act.

“I hereby nominate Mr Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the Deputy Governor of Homa Bay County, subject to approval by the County Assembly,” the statement read in part.

The position was declared vacant after Oyugi Magwanga tendered his resignation, citing irreconcilable differences with his boss.

At the time of his nomination, Onyango was serving as the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Roads and Public Works. 

However, Michael Kojo Otieno and Evance Otieno Oloo moved to court to challenge Onyango’s nomination to the position.

The two petitioners argued that Homa Bay County had failed to comply with the Constitution’s two-thirds gender requirement.

They also alleged that the county had failed to comply with the Public Appointments (County Assemblies Approval) Act, 2017.

However, Justice Nzioki Makau dismissed the petition, ruling that the petitioners had failed to establish any violation of the law.
