It’s impossible to replace Raila Odinga, nobody should attempt – Ruto
President William Ruto has said that former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga, cannot be replaced.
President William Ruto has said that former Prime Minister, the late Raila Odinga, cannot be replaced.
Speaking on Sunday, September 13, in Kisumu, President Ruto said leaders should not attempt to replace Raila.
The Head of State said leaders should instead work to preserve the former ODM leader’s ideals and legacy.
“It will never be possible to replace the honorable Raila Odinga, and nobody should attempt. But we can only work together to make sure that what he believed in, his legacy lives on and informs the future of the development of our nation,” Ruto said.
President Ruto described the late Raila as a nationalist and statesman who championed the national agenda.
“The late Raila Odinga never believed in tribal politics; he built his career as a nationalist, as a statesman,” he stated.
“Raila built a national party; he had an agenda that was national and he left behind a legacy that is national.”
Further, President Ruto said the ODM and UDA parties are not competitors but partners in the broad-based government.
The President pledged to ensure the ODM party and Raila’s legacy continue to influence the country’s development.

“ODM and UDA parties are not competitors; they are partners in the broad-based government. In honour of my friend the late Raila Odinga, I will make it my responsibility and business to ensure that his legacy, his party and what he believed in lives on as we work to build our nation,” he added.
His remarks come days after the ODM party announced a month-long commemoration marking one year since the passing of Raila.
In a statement, ODM confirmed that it had dedicated the entire month of October to honour Raila’s memory.
The party further announced a calendar of activities for the month, including candle lighting, a major rally and family activities.
“God plucked the best flower from our midst. In recognition of his tireless contribution to our country’s democracy and his Pan-Africanism, the party is dedicating the month of October as mwezi wa Baba with the following activities,” the statement read in part.
ODM invited Kenyans for candle lighting on October 2. Kenyans across the country will be required to light candles in remembrance of Raila at 6 p.m.
