A vehicle belonging to former Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza has been stoned and damaged during clashes at Githongo Market as tensions escalate ahead of the county’s Mashujaa Day celebrations.

The incident on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, reportedly left one person injured and taken to hospital, with the confrontation involving supporters of Mwangaza and those of Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia.

The vehicle was reportedly part of Mwangaza’s motorcade as she prepared to attend the celebrations at Githongo Stadium, where the governor was presiding over the county event.

Mwangaza’s husband, Murega Baichu, accused a local elected leader of being involved in the stoning of the vehicle.

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including what triggered the clashes and who was responsible for the damage, remained unclear.

In a Facebook post following the incident, Mwangaza accused individuals she described as government-sponsored goons of targeting her during the celebrations.

“Government Sponsored goons on a mission to kill Kawira Mwangaza in presence of police,” she wrote, claiming that the incident happened in Githongo during Mashujaa Day.

The former governor also directed criticism at individuals she accused of being behind the confrontation, linking the incident to the political tensions in the county.

However, her claim that the attackers intended to kill her was not independently established, and no official account confirming the motive behind the incident was immediately available.

The reported attack comes amid heightened political tensions in Meru, where Mwangaza has recently raised concerns over the safety of her supporters during political activities.

On Sunday, October 18, 2026, Mwangaza accused groups of youths of attacking supporters of the Linda Mwananchi movement in Ituine and Gituine in Igembe Central, as well as along the Laare road.

In a series of Facebook posts, she claimed that some of the youths were armed with pangas and claimed that a suspect had fired a gun during the confrontations.

“Amepiga risasi but wananchi hawataki ujinga,” she wrote in one of the posts, claiming that one had fired a shot.

Mwangaza called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to intervene, raising concerns over the alleged possession of illegal firearms and claims of intimidation.

The latest confrontation in Githongo adds to the concerns over political tolerance and the safety of leaders and supporters attending public events in Meru.
