Passenger bus with 50 people burst into flames along Nairobi - Mombasa Highway
Several passengers escaped unharmed after a 50-seater passenger bus burst into flames in Voi, Taita Taveta County, on the morning of Friday, September 4.
Preliminary reports indicate that the bus caught fire shortly after two of its rear tyres reportedly burst, forcing passengers to evacuate the vehicle.
Witnesses said the bus was travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa when the incident occurred, with all passengers said to have escaped safely, and the company is yet to release a statement on the incident.
Images showed the vehicle engulfed in thick smoke, with passengers and other road users standing at a distance, watching the unfolding incident.
By the time the fire was being put out, it had burnt the vehicle beyond repair, leaving behind a metallic skeleton of the bus, depicting the extent of the damage.
Preliminary reports linked the incident to the bursting of two rear tyres, although it was not immediately clear whether the tyre failures triggered the fire or were a result of another mechanical problem.
Fires involving long-distance vehicles are often associated with mechanical or electrical faults, including overheating brakes, electrical failures, fuel leaks and poor maintenance, particularly during lengthy journeys.

The latest incident comes just a day after a long-distance trailer heading to Uganda burst into flames on Thursday, September 3, in the Kipsitet area near Moi Girls Kipsitet in Kericho County, along the Kericho-Kisumu Highway.
Reports indicated that the trailer caught fire moments after it was parked along the busy highway, with the exact cause of the incident yet to be established.
By the time the flames were put out, the inferno had consumed and extensively damaged the entire front section of the trailer, leaving behind a mangled wreck.
According to witnesses, the driver was inside the vehicle and was initially unaware that the trailer had caught fire. He reportedly noticed the incident moments later before scampering to safety.
A water truck and traffic police officers later arrived at the scene and managed to put out the fire, although the flames had already caused extensive damage to the cabin.
