Probe as mental health researcher Dr Victoria Mutiso shot dead near KNH in Nairobi
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has launched investigations into the fatal shooting of Dr Victoria Nthunya Mutiso, which occurred on the morning of July 29 in the Upper Hill area of Nairobi.
According to DCI, Dr Mutiso was shot in unclear circumstances in what seems like a targeted attack, barely a year after a similar attack resulted in the death of Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were.
DCI, in a statement, said preliminary investigations indicate that the deceased had requested an online taxi service when she sustained fatal gunshot injuries under unclear circumstances.
Reports indicate Mutiso was gunned down after a gunman on a motorbike opened fire on the taxi she was travelling in.
Witnesses say another vehicle intercepted the taxi before the gunmen swooped in and opened fire, killing the doctor on the spot.
“Immediately upon receiving the report, police officers, supported by Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) detectives, promptly visited, secured and processed the scene. Relevant forensic exhibits were recovered and documented for analysis, while witnesses were interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation,” the DCI said.
Adding, “Detectives also visited the medical facility where the victim had been taken.”

Mutiso was a well-known clinical psychologist and mental health researcher and served as the Head of Research at the Africa Mental Health Research and Training Foundation (AMHRTF), where her work focused heavily on child and adolescent mental well-being.
Her work in public health also focused on youth interventions, adapting toolkits for marginalised urban and rural Kenyan communities, co-leading the NIHR-funded HOPE Project on homelessness and severe mental illness, and co-authoring Your A-Z on Mental Health with Professor David Ndetei.
The place of her death, KNH, has sparked a lot of debate, as it is approximately 3.4 kilometres from the City Roundabout, where the late MP Ong’odo Were was killed after being attacked by armed men in a targeted assassination.
That location specifically has become infamous, as it is also the area where the Mathare-based activist Davis Lichuma was dumped and later found unconscious after an alleged abduction on June 28, after attending the Gen-Z commemoration demonstrations on June 25.
