Rigathi Gachagua responds to calls to deputise Sifuna in 2027

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader, Rigathi Gachagua, has announced that he is willing to support Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna for the presidency seat in the 2027 elections.

Speaking during an engagement with the Kenyan community in Spokane, Washington, USA, on Sunday, September 6, Gachagua said he is willing to go further to deputise Sifuna in the coming elections if he is agreed upon by the opposition as their candidate.

According to the former Deputy President, Sifuna, just like any other member of the opposition, is an equal and can be picked to fly the opposition’s flag against President William Ruto.

“We are very serious presidential candidates, and Sifuna is one of them, and we can give to anybody, including Sifuna. I have told my younger brother Edwin Sifuna not to be persuaded by anybody; go for it,” Gachagua stated.

“I have told him not to be intimidated by anybody. You have come of age. There is no problem; even I can deputise Sifuna,” he added.

However, the DCP leader noted that Sifuna must be agreed upon by every other official in the opposition, following their agreement to only field a single candidate to face Ruto.

Gachagua noted that a single candidate will guarantee their coalition victory in round one of the election, maintaining that it is the easiest and surest way to defeat Ruto.

“The people of Kenya have told us one single presidential candidate. It is the easiest and surest way. We have agreed among ourselves; we shall agree on one person,” he added.

While maintaining that he is the best candidate to defeat the president, Gachagua highlighted his numbers, the strategy, and his past relationship with Ruto, stating that he knows him too well.

However, the former DP maintained that he was willing to support anyone picked by the coalition, including Sifuna, Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka, among others.

Gachagua said that it was mainly time for the young people, stating that their time to lead had come.

“It is about time we accept that we cannot be telling our young leaders they are the leaders of tomorrow; that is misguiding them,” he said.

Although the Nairobi Senator has not officially declared his bid to vie for the top seat, he has remained open to working with the wider opposition to make Ruto a one-term president.

Sifuna is currently fighting to register his political party after being kicked out as the Secretary General of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM).

Under the Linda Mwananchi Movement, Sifuna has traversed the country campaigning against Ruto even as political campaigns intensify.
