Six crew members were rescued while four others remain missing after a boat capsized in deep-sea waters off Lamu County.

The incident involving MV Shukrani occurred at around 10 pm on September 23, 2026, at Mwambasani Bay near Kizingitini in Lamu East, police said.

According to police, fishermen who were in the area responded after the boat capsized and managed to rescue six of the 10 people who were reportedly on board.

The rescued crew members were taken to Kiwayu Dispensary, where they were examined and found to be in stable condition.

They were later taken to Kiwayu Police Post for questioning as authorities sought to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, police said.

The survivors told police that the boat had departed from Lamu and was headed to Somalia, allegedly carrying foodstuffs.

Four other crew members remain unaccounted for as search efforts continue.

Police and local maritime authorities are expected to coordinate further search and rescue operations while investigations continue to establish what caused the vessel to capsize.

Cases of boat capsizing have been on the rise at the coast amid calls for caution because of the rough waters.

The recent incidents have left at least a dozen people dead.
