Universitiy Fund ssends notice to first year students over scholarship applications

The University Fund has announced that it has opened applications for students who are yet to report to universities in September, offering scholarship opportunities to every student recently placed by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Placement Service (KUCCPS).

In a statement on Monday, July 13, the fund announced that the portal for application was opened on July 8 and will remain open till September 6, urging students to seek the government scholarship.

According to the fund, the scholarship is open to students placed by KUCCPS to public universities, while those placed at private universities are urged to seek a student loan from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB).

“To qualify for the Universities Fund scholarships, students must be Kenyan citizens who have been placed in a public university by KUCCPS,” the notice read in part.

Following the application opening, the fund outlined the requirements for first-time students seeking government scholarships for the 2026/2027 academic year.

According to the fund, students applying for the scholarships must submit key personal and academic documents to enable the processing of financial support under the Student-Centred Funding Model.

For a complete first-time scholarship application, students are required to have a valid email address, a mobile phone number registered in their name, KCPE and KCSE examination details, a recent passport-size photograph, and a university admission letter.

Applicants must also provide a birth certificate or national identity card, their parents’ or guardians’ registered mobile phone number and national identity card number, and, where applicable, a parent’s death certificate.

“For a complete first-time scholarship application, a student should have the following: a valid email address; a valid mobile phone number registered in the student’s name; KCPE and KCSE index numbers and years of examination,” the fund stated.

The Universities Fund Acting Chief Executive Officer, Edwin Wanyonyi, urged the students to apply early through the HEF Portal to allow timely processing and disbursement of financial support.

“The scholarships are intended to ensure that every eligible Kenyan student has access to higher education regardless of their financial background,” Wanyonyi said.

• Visit the Higher Education Financing (HEF) Portal at hef.co.ke.
• Create an account using a valid email address and a mobile phone number registered in your name.
• Log in and complete the scholarship application form.
• Provide your KCPE and KCSE index numbers and years of examination.
• Upload the required documents.
• Review all the information to ensure it is accurate before submitting the application.
• Submit the application before September 6, 2026.
