5 people dead, 21 injured after lorry ferrying traders overturns in Kitui
At least five people have been confirmed dead and 21 others injured following a grisly road accident involving a lorry along the Ikutha-Kasaala Road in Kitui County.
The accident occurred at Kasarani, past Mutulu Shopping Centre, along the Ikutha-Mutulu-Kasaala Road after the lorry ferrying traders to Kasaala Market reportedly lost control and overturned.
Ikutha Sub-County Police Commander Raphael Mutiso confirmed that five people died on the spot, with several other people left nursing serious injuries.
According to the police officer, the victims included one man and four women, with the bodies of the deceased moved to the Mutomo Level 4 Sub-County Hospital Mortuary.
A further 21 people sustained injuries in the crash and were rushed to Ikutha Level 4 Hospital, where they are receiving medical treatment.
The circumstances surrounding the accident had not been revealed at the time of publication, with the police expected to investigate what caused the lorry to lose control.
Images from the scene showed the white lorry lying upside down by the roadside, with several victims lying on the ground as residents and emergency responders carried out rescue efforts.
The latest tragedy has renewed concerns over road safety even as it comes amid a surge in road accidents across the country.

Just two days earlier, several people were injured after at least three vehicles, including a Super Metro bus, were involved in a road accident at Kinungi along the Nairobi-Nakuru Highway.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, around 9 pm, with the vehicles colliding on the busy highway, leaving several passengers injured and others trapped inside the wreckage.
Preliminary reports indicated that the Super Metro bus was travelling from Nairobi to Busia, while another bus was headed towards Nairobi when the collision occurred.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the scene and helped retrieve passengers trapped inside the wreckage before rushing those injured to hospital for treatment.
