Police deny shooting incident on Governor Kang’ata’s driver

Police have denied reports that Murang’a Governor Irungu Kangata’s driver was shot during the Linda Mwananchi rally in Nyahururu on Sunday, July 12, after the rally was marred by violent moments. It started before ending abruptly.

In a statement moments after the incident, the National Police Service (NPS) said that violence was experienced during the rally attended by other Linda Mwananchi officials after rival groups clashed, but maintained that no shooting incident occurred.

According to the police, preliminary reports established that a group of individuals attempted to disrupt the rally by throwing stones, resulting in minor injuries to several members of the public. including Kangata’s driver.

“In Nyahururu Town, a group of individuals attempted to disrupt a political rally by throwing stones, causing minor injuries to several members of the public, including one Joseph Gitau, who sustained a chest injury and was treated and discharged. Contrary to some allegations, there was no shooting incident. Police responded promptly and arrested six suspects, who have been placed in custody pending arraignment,” NPS stated.

The police added that Governor Kang’ata’s driver sustained injuries on the chest, but was treated and discharged.

The statement comes after the Muranga governor confirmed that his driver was shot in the chest, with the leaders pointing fingers at the police for disrupting their rally.

Kang’ata claimed armed civilians initially confronted his convoy, before a confrontation ensued between his driver and persons believed to be police officers.

“We were first stoned while in church. My vehicle was blocked and confiscated. My driver was injured by police. He has a bullet lodged on his chest,” Governor Kang’ata alleged.

Following the incident, police confirmed six arrests linked to the Nyahururu attack, with the authorities trailing others who orchestrated the attack.

The Nyahururu incident was one of two politically linked disturbances reported on Sunday, all directed at the Linda Mwananchi team.

In Kisumu City, police said violent clashes between two opposing groups left one person dead, several others injured, nine motorcycles torched, and a police vehicle damaged.

This happened after a group of armed youth tried to forcefully access a church attended by Siaya Governor James Orengo and Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, both affiliated with the Linda Mwananchi team.

According to police reports, another group supporting the leaders had barricaded the church compound, trying to repel the attackers, before the exchange turned dirty, leading to clashes.

Police reports indicate that eight suspects were arrested in connection with the Kisumu violence, with efforts to trace additional suspects ongoing.

While condemning what it described as acts of political intolerance, violence, and goonism, police warned that anyone involved in sponsoring or participating in unlawful acts would face the full force of the law regardless of their political affiliation or public office.

At the same time, the service appealed to members of the public with information that could assist investigations to report to the nearest police station or use the service’s anonymous reporting channels.
