Drama ensued in Shamata, Nyandarua County, after residents stormed a police station carrying a casket, protesting over the killing of one of their own on Wednesday, October 28.

The mourners halted the burial of the deceased and began marching towards Shamata Police Station, demanding to know what really happened to one of their own.

Footage obtained by this publication showed hundreds of protesters carrying placards and twigs, while a section of them carried a brown casket, allegedly with a body inside, as they marched towards Shamata Police Station while chanting.

The residents were protesting over the killing of one of their own in cold blood in the past week and now want swift investigations into the matter and justice to be done.

“I am a resident of Shamatha. We have come here today to picket regarding the issue of one Gashema who was murdered in cold blood last week, and all we’re asking the government is that justice must be served and must be served,” stated one protester.

They were also protesting over the rise in crime in the area, demanding police take action.

Reports indicate the protesters camped outside Shamata Police Station for some hours, after which police came to peacefully quell the commotion.

One of the police bosses at Shamata Station said they have already launched the investigation and have leads on four suspects.

The police boss stated that volunteers within the community will be chosen to identify the four suspects so that the investigation can go further.

“Investigations into this matter have already begun, and we have leads to four suspects. What we now want is community volunteers so that we can identify the suspects and move to the next stage of our investigations,” stated the police boss.

In the meantime, the mourners were urged to return to take the body to the mortuary, even as the probe into the matter takes shape.

A similar incident occurred in Nairobi County after chaos erupted at Nairobi’s City Mortuary on March 12 when youths demanding their flood victim friend’s body stormed the facility and grabbed a casket.

The youths rushed outside, shouting his name while carrying an empty coffin, but discovered the coffin was empty, prompting them to return and demand that mortuary staff release the correct remains.
