KNEC issues guidelines, timeline for 2026 grade 10 School-Based Assessment

As schools begin the third term and prepare learners for the final assessments of the 2026 academic year, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has issued timelines for the administration of Grade 10 School-Based Assessment (SBA) written tests. 

In a circular, the council said Grade 10 assessment materials will be made available to schools through the Competency-Based Assessment (CBA) portal from October 5, and the uploading of results should be completed by October 23. 

“Schools will be expected to administer the assessment tools and performance tasks, score and upload the assessment outcomes of all learners on the CBA portal within the stipulated timeframe,” KNEC stated.

The council instructed school principals to log into the CBA portal using their school credentials, after which the system will send a one-time password to the registered phone number for verification.

KNEC said school heads will oversee the downloading of the assessment tools, while subject teachers will administer the tests, mark them and submit the learners’ scores through the portal.

The council specified that materials containing colour images should either be printed in colour or accessed using digital devices available in schools. 

KNEC has also directed schools to retain records and supporting evidence generated during the assessment process.

The scheduled assessments cover subjects across the STEM, Social Sciences, and Arts and Sports categories, including Mathematics, Sciences, Business Studies, Geography, History and Citizenship, Music and Dance, and Sports and Recreation.

In a separate circular, KNEC also outlined the 2026 SBA arrangements for learners in Grades 3, 4, 5, 7 and 8, as well as pupils under the Stage-Based Curriculum.

The materials for these assessments will be accessible from September 28, with schools required to complete the submission of scores by October 23.

The second circular includes the Kenya Early Years Assessment (KEYA) for Grade 3, Kenya Foundation Level Education Assessment (KFLEA) tools and SBA written tests and performance tasks covering Grades 4, 5, 7 and 8. 

Grade 3 tests will include Mathematics and English activities, while Grade 4 and 5 students will be assessed in Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Agriculture, Science and Technology, Social Studies, Religious Education and Creative Arts.

Grades 7 and 8 assessments include Mathematics, English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Social Studies, Religious Education, Integrated Science, Agriculture, Creative Arts and Sports, and Pre-Technical Studies.

For learners in the Special Needs Education Foundation Level, KNEC will provide assessment tools covering Activities of Daily Living, Communication, Social Skills and Pre-Literacy Skills.
