74-year-old Dutch man under investigation over child sex abuse at Kenyan orphanages

A 74-year-old Dutch man is being investigated by authorities in the Netherlands over allegations of sexual offenses against children during his years living and working in Kenya. 

According to news reports from the country, the suspect is facing allegations including the repeated sexual abuse of two girls and the production of images depicting child sexual abuse. 

Prosecutors presented details of the investigation at a court hearing in Den Bosch on August 24, saying the alleged abuse of one girl continued over several years, while the suspected production of child abuse material dates back to 2011. 

Investigators believe some of the alleged offenses took place at orphanages where the man worked in Kenya. 

They disclosed that an examination of the suspect’s seized phone produced concerning evidence, including messages that they said showed an interest in young children.

The suspect had previously been investigated in Kenya over allegations involving at least 21 children, but that case ended in an acquittal in 2023 after several children and parents withdrew their statements.

Dutch prosecutors said they suspect bribes and threats led to those withdrawals, but acknowledged that the earlier case has already been concluded and cannot be prosecuted again for the same alleged acts. 

Authorities are also examining a separate allegation that the man possessed child sexual abuse images in Kenya from 2017, as well as his earlier conviction in the Netherlands for sexual offences against children.

In the early 1990s, he was found guilty of sexually abusing six children and handed a three-year prison sentence, with six months suspended.

Dutch investigators are seeking to question witnesses in Kenya and have requested mutual legal assistance to gather evidence for the case.

The man has been in custody since his arrest in May after authorities learned he had returned to the Netherlands to renew his passport. 

A court has ordered that he remain detained until at least the next interim hearing scheduled for November 9.
