Former IEBC officer faces 8-month jail term over fake university degree
The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has secured an 8-month jail term for a former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) officer after being found to have used a fake certificate to secure employment.
On Monday, September 21, EACC, in a statement, said that the former IEBC official, who served as an Assistant Elections Officer, was convicted of using fake academic certificates.
“A former Assistant Elections Officer at the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) has been convicted for uttering a false academic certificate,” EACC stated.
According to the commission, the Milimani Court found the suspect guilty of uttering a false document and fined him Ksh80,000.
However, if he failed to pay the fine, the former electoral officer would serve an eight-month jail term.
“In its judgment delivered on September 17 2026, the Milimani Anti-Corruption Court found the convict guilty of uttering a false document and fined him Ksh80,000, and in default, he is to serve eight months’ imprisonment,” the commission added.
In documents presented to the court, the suspect had submitted a forged Bachelor of Business Management (Finance and Banking) degree certificate, purportedly issued by Moi University, in support of his application for promotion.

He was later promoted to a higher rank in the electoral body, from Grade 8 to Grade 7, before being arrested and arraigned.
EACC welcomed the conviction and sentence, noting that the outcome serves as a deterrent to individuals who engage in similar criminal conduct.
The issue of using fake certificates to secure employment in the country, especially in the public service, has been rampant in recent times.
Several public officers have been arrested and arraigned over the use of forged degrees and KCSE certificates, with the practice costing the government millions of shillings in salaries paid to individuals who allegedly secured employment or promotions using fake academic credentials.
However, to address this, the Public Service Commission (PSC) and the Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) have intensified efforts to introduce a system to verify academic qualifications for public servants easily.
The move plans involving the Ministry of Education will integrate academic credential authentication systems to strengthen the verification of qualifications presented by job applicants before recruitment.
