Ask forgiveness from Gatundu residents, not me; Gachagua to MP Kagombe

Democracy for Citizens’ Party leader Rigathi Gachagua has said he has forgiven politicians who supported his removal from office.

Speaking on Sunday, August 16, 2026, Gachagua also told Gatundu South MP GG Kagombe that seeking forgiveness from him would not be enough.

Gachagua was responding to Kagombe’s recent remarks in which the lawmaker appeared to seek reconciliation with the former deputy president after leaving the United Democratic Alliance.

Kagombe, who recently decamped from UDA, had likened his political shift to the biblical transformation of Saul into Paul, saying he had changed his position after what he described as a realisation about President William Ruto.

“I have now turned into Paul from Saul. Even in the book of Luke, there is the story of the lost son, and that is now me,” Kagombe said.

He appealed to Gachagua to accept him back, describing his return as a permanent homecoming.

“For me, I have come to you to admit that indeed, that person, William Ruto, lied to all of us. And because I have seen the light, please, Gachagua, receive me. I have returned home, where I will stay forever,” he said.

Gachagua said he had no personal problem with politicians who turned against him during his time in government, including those he accused of playing a role in his removal from office.

“Mimi sina shida. Mimi ni Mkristo. Ata wale walinifukuza kwa office, I have forgiven them,” Gachagua said.

However, he appeared to draw a distinction between personal forgiveness and political accountability, telling Kagombe that his return would require him to address the people of Gatundu.

“Lakini baada ya kuja kutafuta msamaha kwangu, aende atafute kwa watu ya Gatundu. Or isn’t it?” he said.

The remarks put the focus on the political relationship between Kagombe and his former supporters in Gatundu South as the 2027 General Election approaches.

Gachagua also accused the MPs who supported Ruto of contributing to what he described as the President’s disregard for the Mt Kenya region.

“Unajua hawa wambunge ndio walifanya Ruto adharau jamii yetu,” Gachagua said.

His comments come as political realignments gather pace ahead of the 2027 election, with politicians who previously backed the Kenya Kwanza administration reassessing their positions.

Kagombe’s departure from UDA and his subsequent appeal to Gachagua have added another dimension to the emerging political contest in the region.
