A postmortem examination has identified a heart attack as the cause of former High Court judge Joseph Mutava’s death after he fell ill following a night out with friends.
Former High Court judge Justice Joseph Mbalu Mutava, the husband of Kibwezi East Member of Parliament Jessica Nduku Mbalu, died following a sudden illness on the night of Friday, August 21, 2026.
A postmortem examination conducted on Monday returned findings indicating that Mutava died of a heart attack.
However, his wife has requested further toxicology tests as the family seeks to fully account for the circumstances surrounding his death.
“We conducted a post-mortem examination on Monday. The report says he suffered a heart attack. I have asked for a toxicology test to find closure,” MP Mbalu said.
According to the family, Mutava had spent part of the evening at Reyfee, a well-known bar on the outskirts of Kibwezi township, where he was in good spirits watching Arsenal FC beat Coventry City 3-0.
A designated driver brought him home in the early hours of Saturday morning.

Earlier that Friday, he had made the trip from Nairobi to the countryside to pay his respects to a bereaved family in the neighbourhood.
Upon returning home, Mutava walked unaided from the vehicle into the sitting room before his condition deteriorated rapidly.
“Justice walked from the car to the sitting room himself. He fell seriously ill afterwards,” a family member said.
He was rushed to Othrofi Hospital in Makindu Township, where medical staff pronounced him dead on arrival.
His remains were subsequently transferred to Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.
The family has confirmed that, while the postmortem points to cardiac failure, they are unwilling to close the matter until toxicology results are available, given the sudden and unexpected nature of his death following an otherwise ordinary evening.
