Chelsea Edge Liverpool in Dramatic Finish as Estevao’s Late Goal Hands Reds Third Straight Defeat

A dramatic 2-1 loss at Stamford Bridge to Chelsea on Saturday intensified Liverpool’s concerning downturn, with Estevao Willian scoring in the 90th minute to secure the win over the hosts. The men of Arne Slot seemed to have salvaged a point when the second-half equaliser by Cody Gakpo wiped out the brilliant early goal by Moises Caicedo. However, in the final moments, the Swede Estevao, the teenage sensation at Chelsea, drove forward at a short distance to cause the home crowd to go crazy and to put Liverpool into even greater crisis.

Only a few weeks back, the Reds appeared to be invincible, with seven victories out of seven in all contests, of which five were in the league. They are now licking their wounds after consecutive defeats to Crystal Palace, Galatasaray and Chelsea– all of them being delivered in a heart-wrenching manner.

Looking back on the collapse, one of their managers, Arne Slot, was so annoyed at the bad things that had befallen their side recently.

As I said at Galatasaray, you had a one-on-one opportunity, and then they were going to get a penalty. We were beaten back on Palace into extra time, and now today might have done it either side, Slot said to himself. The margins are not falling our way at the moment, and we have to put in more effort to make sure we are not at the mercy of the margins.

To the extent of Chelsea, the victory came as a huge relief to manager Enzo Maresca, who had been under pressure after two straight defeats in the league. The morale of his team propelled them to the sixth position in the standings and also demonstrated strength in the face of the defeat of some of the main defenders in the process.

Chelsea had stated its intentions early, and they were aggressive and punitive on the errors made by Liverpool. A sloppy handling of the ball in the middle of the field in the 14th minute gave Caicedo an opportunity to run forward, Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate having retreated behind him. Liverpool was stunned by the goal and could find neither rhythm nor control. Liverpool attacking stars, such as Alexander Isak and Mohamed Salah, meanwhile, went through another frustrating performance. The club record signing, Isaac, barely played a part in the match and wasted a free header, and Salah’s missing the ball in the first half underscored his current lack of form.

It was almost an hour into the second half before the Reds could get their first attempt on target when Ryan Gravenberch hit a long-range effort, safely caught by Robert Sanchez. Liverpool was not sharp enough in possession despite the improved possession until the 63rd minute, when persistence eventually yielded results.

The defence of Chelsea hesitated, and Szoboszlai was enabled to deliver a dangerous cross. Isak flung the delivery in the direction of Gakpo, who did not miss his first goal in eight attempts as he levelled the score at 1-1.

The leveller appeared to revive Liverpool a little, but Chelsea checked them with renewed vigour. The Blues, though centre-backs Joshua Acheampong and Benoit Badiashile were injured, attacked with wave after wave. Mamardashvili made spectacular saves to disallow Jamie Gittens and Estevao, and Enzo Fernandez missed a glancing shot that hit the post agonisingly close.

At the culmination of the dead period, the pressure of the Chelsea team paid off. Marc Cucurella put a pinpoint cross into the box, and Estevao reacted the best, extending to control the ball in on a tight angle. Stamford Bridge was rocking with the Brazilian applauding his dramatic goal, and Maresca running across the touchline in glee, having been sent off by the referee.

The players of Liverpool looked shocked as Chelsea celebrated a hard-fought victory. Slot stood still on the sidelines, trying to accept another painful loss that revealed the weakness of his team during crucial situations.

Title hopefuls to a team who have suddenly lost all confidence, now Liverpool needs to get the fire going again that made them invincible – otherwise their season is going to get even more out of control.
