Gideon Moi’s Withdrawal from Baringo Race Signals 2027 Political Realignment, Says CS Murkomen

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has commended the KANU Party Chairman Gideon Moi to pull out of the Baringo senatorial race saying that it was a political sound judgment and a show of unity.

At the Jukwa La Usalama Forum in the evening of Thursday, Murkomen added that the decision by Moi to step down was a measure of political maturity and foresight that had hardly been witnessed in Kenya in the competitive political arena. He observed that the decision of Moi to retire instead of competing with the younger people was a noble move that highlights his statesmanship.
Continuing to compete in the Senate seat would have made the former senator less attractive, which is why, Murkomen said, Gideon Moi made a very wise decision. He further stated that the move was disappointing to some of the supporters of Moi, but it was in his long term and reputation.
Murkomen pointed out that experienced leaders should at times sacrifice their own ambitions to serve the country and their generation by providing guidance through mentoring and by uniting their nation, and that the step taken by Moi was a mark of respect to the process of generational change in leadership.
A Greater Political Strategy
The Cabinet Secretary also disclosed that the recent encounter between President William Ruto and Moi at State House was not just a mere social event but it was a tactical move on reconciling a unified broad-based government with expectance of the 2027 general election.
Murkomen revealed that the negotiation between the President and the KANU leader revolved around creating inclusiveness and unifying alliances between the two sides in Kenya.
The unity between President Ruto and Gideon Moi meeting was a sign of unity, Murkomen said. As you are aware, the government is growing to accommodate allies of Raila Odinga and former president Uhuru Kenyatta. The request to invite Moi to join this broad-based government reveals the willingness of the President to see a united Kenya by the year 2027.
He opined that Moi is in the upcoming coalition as an attempt by President Ruto to reposition the political dynamics early on and stabilize his administration before the next election period.
KANU’s Strategic Withdrawal
These comments by Murkomen were made only a few hours after KANU Party officially announced that Moi had pulled out of the Baringo Senatorial race. KANU Secretary General George Wainaina said that the party would not nominate a candidate to the post, a move considered by many analysts as a political goodwill gesture to the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
It was reported that at least two private meetings had been held between Moi and Ruto prior to the most recent State House meeting where the President is reported to have persuaded KANU leader to retire. The pull-out has since been seen as a strategic move towards clearing the path to political reconciliation and political collaboration between KANU and the Ruto administration.

Political observers have observed that the rapprochement between Ruto and Moi two figures, which used to be regarded as political opponents, signals a shift in Rift Valley politics.
