A Tahmeed bus travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa was completely destroyed by fire at Kiunduani, Kibwezi, in Makueni County, on the morning of Wednesday, October 28, 2026, with all passengers escaping without injuries.

Witnesses said the incident happened at around 5 am at Dakota Complex, between Makindu town and Kiunduani, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, after the bus reportedly developed mechanical problems.

The driver reportedly noticed the problem early and moved the vehicle off the road, allowing passengers to evacuate before the fire spread and engulfed the bus.

Images showed the vehicle engulfed in thick smoke as passengers and other road users watched from a safe distance.

The fire completely reduced the bus to a metallic skeleton, destroying passengers’ luggage and personal belongings. However, no injuries were reported following the incident.

By the time the fire was being put out, it had burnt the vehicle beyond repair, with the mangled wreck towed to the nearest police station as investigations commenced.

During the incident, transport along the key route was temporarily disrupted, with motorists forced to seek alternative routes as rescuers moved in to clear the debris.

The exact cause of the fire remains unclear, and Tahmeed Bus Company had not issued an official statement on the incident at the time of publication.

Fires involving buses can result from various factors, including electrical faults, fuel leaks, overheating components, and mechanical failures, but investigations could point to different reasons.

The latest incident comes barely two months after another Tahmeed bus caught fire in Voi, Taita Taveta County, on the morning of September 4.

In that incident, the bus, which was travelling from Nairobi to Mombasa, reportedly burst into flames shortly after two of its rear tyres burst, forcing passengers to evacuate.

Police reported that all passengers escaped safely, although the incident raised concerns about the safety of long-distance bus travel.
