I was not aware that he had died: Museveni mourns Cyrus Jirongo
Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni has sent his condolences to the family of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, saying he was unaware that the veteran Kenyan politician had died.
In a statement shared on his social media handles on Monday, September 21, 2026, Museveni said he has unknowingly learnt recently that Jirongo died in a road accident last December.
“I have just learnt that Senator Cyrus Jirongo passed away last December in a motor accident. I was not aware that he had died,” Museveni said.
Museveni described Jirongo as a good and patriotic leader who served Kenya with dedication.
“This is very sad. Jirongo was a good and patriotic leader who served his country with dedication. We shall miss him,” he said.
The Ugandan president extended his condolences to Jirongo’s family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya.
“My condolences go to his family, relatives, friends and the people of Kenya. May his soul rest in peace,” Museveni said.
Museveni’s condolences came shortly after he named Jirongo as the person who had brought to his attention concerns surrounding Uganda’s controversial government-to-government fuel procurement arrangement.
Museveni recently said Jirongo had informed him about the role of middlemen in the procurement of petroleum products destined for Uganda.
According to Museveni, Jirongo told him that Kenyan middlemen were involved in the procurement process, a situation he linked to the high prices of petroleum products in Uganda.

“For instance, the matter of purchasing petroleum products for the country—a whole country, Uganda—I did not know that these wonderful people were buying those products through middlemen in Kenya by tendering,” Museveni said.
Questions have emerged over the circumstances surrounding the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo after Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni revealed that the late politician had alerted him to concerns over Uganda’s fuel procurement arrangements.
Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has questioned whether there could be a connection between Jirongo’s death and the information he allegedly shared with Museveni regarding the government-to-government fuel procurement deal.
Speaking on Monday, September 21, 2026, Onyonka said Museveni’s revelation had prompted questions over whether Jirongo may have faced threats after raising concerns about the petroleum procurement arrangements.
“Many of us in the opposition, and indeed, people who are of basic common sense, are now beginning to ask me, Is there a link between Jirongo’s death and the fact that he is most probably the one who actually told Museveni that you are being shafted by these people? “Onyonka said.
