The former Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua, has made a bare-knuckled attack on the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, claiming that he has fake academic papers he can’t defend.
While speaking during an exclusive interview on KTN News on July 22, he claimed that President William Ruto personally told him that Kanja would do whatever the State House wanted since he lacked genuine academic qualifications.
“IG Kaja, his degree certificate is fake, and I can tell you as a matter of fact… I know that because the president told me himself that this man will do what I want because he didn’t have papers,” Gachagua stated.
He further claimed that when Kanja’s academic credentials were challenged during his parliamentary vetting in August 2024, the President allegedly stepped in to help him secure forged certificates.
“It was even challenged, and then the president organised for him to get some fake papers,” Gachagua stated.
He argued that this alleged secret gives President Ruto leverage over Kanja, making him easy to control at the helm of the police service.
The former Deputy President suggested Kanja is being kept in office deliberately so blame can shift to him whenever things go wrong.

Parliament cleared Kanja to take over as the Inspector General of Police in September 2024, following a vetting process where he presented academic and statutory compliance certificates to confirm his eligibility.
To satisfy constitutional requirements for the nation’s top law enforcement role, Kanja tabled a Bachelor of Commerce degree alongside mandatory integrity approvals from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission.
Lawmakers validated his operational record and documented credentials, paving the way for his official approval and swearing-in to lead the National Police Service.
According to Gachagua, Kanja cannot simply walk away from his position because resigning would expose him directly to President Ruto’s wrath, claiming that Kanja is trapped between staying silent and watching events unfold or speaking out and risking his political survival entirely.
Gachagua also mentioned an individual named Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Eliud Langat, describing him as a close associate working alongside the named police officials and also implicating him in the heinous murder of the late blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang’.
