KNEC opens training for senior school and TVET teachers (REQUIREMENTS)

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has opened applications for teachers in senior secondary schools and vocational institutions to undergo training in examination item writing.

KNEC on Tuesday, September 15, said the training is scheduled to run from October 12 to October 30, 2026, focusing on developing quality test items for Competency-Based Assessment (CBA).

According to the exam council, the move is intended to strengthen teachers’ capacity to develop assessment items that effectively measure learners’ competencies, with teachers who complete the training to be engaged in assessment-related activities.

“KNEC is mandated to set and maintain national examination and assessment standards at school, post-school and teacher education levels, and is committed to strengthening teachers’ capacity in classroom and national assessment,” the exam council stated.

“To uphold these standards and support effective evaluation of learner competencies, KNEC invites qualified teachers teaching at Senior School and Vocational Level to apply for an online Training in Item Writing,” it added.

The council explained that the training is necessary as the country continues to transition towards an assessment system that focuses not only on what learners know, but also on their ability to apply knowledge and demonstrate practical skills.

Under the CBE system, assessment is designed to measure learners’ knowledge, skills, attitudes and values through different forms of assessment rather than relying exclusively on traditional written examinations.

The training is particularly important for teachers in Senior School and vocational levels, where KNEC is currently implementing competency-based assessments.

KNEC’s training will equip teachers with skills needed to develop, review and improve assessment items in line with the requirements of competency-based assessment.

Minimum Requirements

KNEC stated that applicants must have unquestionable integrity and an irreproachable professional record.

They must also be professionals, experts or subject specialists in the subject or learning area in which they wish to train and must currently be teaching the subject at either Senior School or Stage-Based Curriculum: Vocational Level.

Applicants must further hold relevant academic and professional qualifications, be conversant with the curriculum designs in their areas of specialisation and have at least one year of teaching experience.

They must also be registered with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and be formally recommended by their heads of institution.

Applications must be submitted online through the KNEC application portal on or before September 30, 2026, with KNEC adding that only shortlisted applicants will be notified.
