KUCCPS advices how first-year students can change university courses

The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Services (KUCCPS) has advised first-year students seeking to change courses through the interfaculty transfer to engage their respective universities.

In a notice, KUCCPS said interfaculty transfer is done by the universities themselves and does not require the intervention of the placement service.

The clarification followed mounting questions from first-year students who wanted to change their courses, but in the same institution they were placed in.

Responding to the query, KUCCPS directed interested students to engage their respective universities, noting that the process is initiated internally by the institutions.

“Interested students should engage their respective universities as the process is initiated internally at the universities,” KUCCPS stated.

The clarification means students seeking to change faculties should first contact their universities for guidance on the application process, requirements and timelines.

The development comes as thousands of students who recently joined universities settle into their programmes and may seek changes based on their academic interests, qualifications or available opportunities.

However, those seeking inter-university transfers can still do so even after the application window closed on August 14.

According to the placement agency, those who were left out remain eligible to seek an inter-institutional transfer in 2026 and/or 2027.

“If they sat for KCSE in 2025, they are eligible for transfer this year, 2026, and/or next year 2027,” KUCCPS said.

The placement service is processing the transfer requests, which are still ongoing, assuring affected students that the letters will be generated once the process is complete.

Students have therefore been advised to regularly check their portal to confirm whether their transfer request was successful, as the letters are being sent directly through the student portal.
