Larry Madowo denied visa by El Salvador over Kenya’s reported Ebola cases
Larry Madowo denied visa by El Salvador over Kenya's reported Ebola cases
Journalist Larry Madowo has said El Salvador denied his visa because Kenya had reported Ebola cases, despite authorities in Nairobi maintaining that there is no widespread outbreak.
The journalist said the visa decision was linked to the reported cases in Kenya.
Madowo’s remarks come as Kenya continues to deal with cases of Ebola, with the country confirming a ninth case on Tuesday, October 20, 2026. The Ministry of Health has said all the infections remain linked to one known cluster.
Madowo said the situation had affected how Kenya was viewed by El Salvador, which has banned citizens from the Democratic Republic of Congo and some neighbouring East and Central African countries. He said the restrictions also affect countries where no Ebola case has been reported.
“El Salvador denied my visa because Kenya reported 8 Ebola cases even though authorities in Nairobi maintain that there’s no widespread outbreak,” Larry Madowo said on Tuesday, October 20, 2026.
The reported visa denial comes as Kenya’s Ministry of Health continues to monitor the Ebola situation. Health authorities have said there has been no transmission outside the known cluster.

Director General for Health Patrick Amoth said the latest patient was already in quarantine when he developed symptoms. This allowed health teams to isolate him, test him and begin treatment promptly.
The latest case involves a 24-year-old man who is a close family member of Kenya’s index case. The index case was the first patient identified in the outbreak and later died.
The Ministry of Health has maintained that the confirmed infections remain connected to the same known cluster. Authorities have also said no transmission outside the group has been detected.
The ninth case was confirmed as Kenya continued its response to the outbreak. A total of 134 contacts have been quarantined as health teams continue monitoring people who may have been exposed.
The latest developments provide the background to Madowo’s remarks about his visa. His statement came as Kenya continued reporting new cases while health authorities maintained that there was no widespread transmission of the virus.
The situation has also seen restrictions placed on travellers from some countries in East and Central Africa. El Salvador has banned citizens of the Democratic Republic of Congo and random neighbouring countries, including some where no Ebola cases have been reported.
