Ministry of Education confirms third term dates, KJSEA, KCSE exams calendar
The Ministry of Education has confirmed that the third term for pre-primary, primary, junior, senior and secondary schools will run from August 24 to October 23.
In a circular issued to regional, county and sub-county directors, the ministry directed that the official 2026 academic calendar be shared with all basic education institutions.
According to the calendar, learners will spend nine weeks in class before the national assessment and examination period begins.
The third term will be followed by the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment (KPSEA), scheduled for October 26 to October 29.
The Kenya Intermediate Level Education Assessment (KILEA) will run from October 26 to October 30.
Additionally, candidates sitting the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) and the Kenya Pre-Vocational Level Education Assessment (KPLEA) will take their examinations between October 26 and November 5.
The Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations are scheduled to take place from November 2 to November 20.
The calendar indicates that learners will then begin their December holidays from October 26 to January 1, 2027.

Further, the ministry maintained its earlier directive prohibiting activities and visits to secondary schools during the third term.
“Activities and visits to secondary schools in the third term of 2026 remain banned as per the earlier circulars,” the ministry’s circular stated.
The restrictions are intended to remain in force throughout the examination period, meaning students will only be able to return home when the term ends.
The measure was introduced by former Education CS Fred Matiang’i, intending to address cheating in national examinations by reducing contact between candidates and other individuals.
The three-week holiday from August 3 to August 21 gives learners a break before returning for an intensive final term and national examinations to close out the year.
