Ministry of Interior declares 13 areas as dangerous and security disturbed (LIST)
The Interior Ministry has extended its declaration of several parts of Marsabit County as security-disturbed and dangerous for another 30 days while ordering residents to surrender firearms.
In a notice, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen declared 13 localities in Marsabit, largely identified as “Hillo”, as dangerous and security-disturbed.
They include Hillo Gorgora, Hillo Orofa, Hillo Walkite, Hillo Tanzania, Hillo Irress Abamartille, Hillo Gootu, Hillo Tessum Qalicha, Hillo Karray, Hillo Hudda, Hillo Qoranjido, Hillo Irress Shindia, Hillo Rabaalee and Hillo Godde Haroressa.
According to Murkomen, the directive to extend the declaration was made after thorough consultations with the National Security Council and in line with the National Police Service Act.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by section 106 (6) of the NPS Act, 2011, the Interior Cabinet Secretary, in consultation with the National Security Council, declares parts of Marsabit as security disturbed and dangerous,” the notice read in part.
While making the announcement, Murkomen said the declaration took effect on June 23, 2026, at 6.30pm and will remain in force for 30 days, subject to review depending on the prevailing situation.

“This notice shall take effect on June 23, 2026, for 30 days and may, at any time, be withdrawn or continued in force for such further period as the Cabinet Secretary may, by notice in the gazette, direct,” it read further.
In a separate notice, the Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja, prohibited the possession of firearms in the same areas, saying the move was intended to support ongoing security operations.
Residents in the listed areas have been ordered to surrender all firearms immediately to the nearest police station, police post, police camp or National Government Administration offices.
“On the taking effect of this notice, all inhabitants of the said areas are ordered, with immediate effect, to surrender all arms in their possession,” Kanja directed.
The latest directives are part of the government’s efforts to restore security in parts of Marsabit County that have experienced cattle rustling and other forms of insecurity.
