ODM support Ruto and will reclaim all former seats; Gladys Wanga

Homa Bay Governor and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) national chairperson Gladys Wanga has vowed that the party will reclaim all its former elective seats ahead of the 2027 General Election, while supporting President William Ruto’s re-election bid.

Wanga said ODM would work to regain every seat it previously held, adding that the presidency would go to Ruto.

“Tutahakikisha viti vyote vilivyokuwa vya ODM vinarudi kwa ODM, Rais ndio tutapea RUTO,” she stated on October 18, 2026 during the North Eastern region visit.

Her remarks outline the party’s direction as it prepares for the next election, with efforts to regain lost seats and strengthen its support beyond its traditional strongholds.

Wanga’s statement comes amid calls for ODM to remain united and expand its national presence following the death of its long-time leader, former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga.

In a tribute marking one year since Raila’s death on October 15, 2025, Wanga reflected on his influence on her political career and his hopes for the party’s future.

She said Raila wanted ODM to remain competitive nationally and uphold democracy, justice, equity and inclusion beyond his lifetime.

“In his final years, BABA spoke passionately about the future of the party beyond his lifetime,” she noted.

Wanga added that Raila remained hopeful in his final days that ODM would lead a coalition capable of forming the next government.

Wanga has also highlighted the need to consolidate ODM’s presence in regions beyond its traditional support base.

In a recent statement, she described North Eastern as a steadfast ODM base and said consultations with party delegates and grassroots leaders had resulted in a commitment to strengthen alliances in the region.

She pointed to Mandera, Garissa and Wajir as areas where the party intends to deepen its political partnerships.

The outreach forms part of ODM’s wider efforts to build support ahead of the 2027 polls as it seeks to recover seats lost in previous elections and strengthen its position nationally.

Wanga said ODM’s future should be guided by the principles Raila championed during his political career, including democracy, fairness and inclusion.

She framed the responsibility facing party leaders as one of sustaining his vision through the party’s work rather than limiting his legacy to commemorations.
