UDA MP Bernard Kitur heckled in Ruto’s presence

Nandi Hills MP Bernard Kitur faced public rejection from sections of the crowd in an incident that highlights growing tensions between elected leaders and residents in President William Ruto’s political backyard.

The incident in Nandi during Ruto’s political tour on Saturday, October 17, 2026, has highlighted the challenges facing some Kenya Kwanza leaders as political temperatures rise ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kitur’s reception comes amid growing instances of elected leaders being heckled during presidential tours, with residents using public gatherings to express dissatisfaction with their representatives.

A similar incident was reported during a UDA constituency function in Nandi Hills in August, 2026, when sections of the crowd interrupted Kitur with chants of “Wantam”, reflecting discontent among some residents.

The heckling of local leaders has also been witnessed elsewhere during Ruto’s development tours, raising questions about the relationship between elected representatives and the electorate.

The incident comes against the backdrop of President Ruto’s recent calls for discipline and responsible conduct among political leaders.

On September 27, 2026, while speaking at a church service in Mwatate, Taita Taveta County, the President urged leaders to act as role models and demonstrate discipline, warning that their behaviour influences the wider society.

“Please, leaders, I humbly beg you to be disciplined and temperate, knowing that many others rely on us and look up to us,” Ruto said.

Although the remarks focused on leadership conduct generally, they came amid increasingly heated political exchanges and disruptions at public gatherings.

Ruto has also urged Kenyans to reject hatred and division, reiterating the message during his October 17, 2026, development tour of Nandi Hills, where he said leaders should be judged by their development plans, track records and vision for the country.

“I want to tell those who want to sell hate and those who want to sell division that we don’t have space for hatred and division in our republic. Kenya wants to move forward,” the president said.
