In a statement made on Wednesday, September 24, PayPal explained that the money will be redirected through a mix of minority investments, strategic acquisitions, PayPal Ventures investment, and bringing new technology and talent to the region. The general idea is to enable the local businesses to increase their reach, spur innovation, and connect with millions of consumers to the global digital marketplace.

The Middle East and Africa are representatives of the most dynamic and fast-growing businesses in the world, according to PayPal President and CEO Alex Chriss. It is an investment of Ksh.12.9billion and is a long-term investment to create technologies, alliances and solutions that can make an entrepreneur go global, enter new markets, and find new opportunities in the digital economy like never before.

This significant announcement is based on the recent growth of PayPal in the region as in April it opened its first regional hub in Dubai. The Dubai hub was created to ensure that business people have easy payment infrastructure, improved security systems as well as improved access to global markets- essential factors in promoting sustainable digital growth.

With its most recent commitment, PayPal aims to reinforce its presence on the new markets. Some of the potential opportunities that the company has already invested in and which are known to have transformed the online payment systems and financial inclusion in the Middle East and Africa include Tabby, Paymob and Stitch.

Senior Vice President, Regional Head, and General Manager of PayPal MEA Otto Williams noted that the company is focused on expanding relationships between local business and the international economy. “The investment points to the commitment of PayPal to business and consumer empowerment,” Williams said. Our mission is to make sure that millions of people and businesses have access to the necessary digital services and financial services to achieve success in the world that is becoming more and more interconnected.

Expert commentators observe that the new investment will probably spur the pace of financial inclusion, improve the adoption of e-commerce, and catalyze innovation amid small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Africa and the Middle East where digital transformation is taking on a scale like never before.

The new emphasis of PayPal on MEA also follows current trends in the world where more and more people want safe, convenient, and comprehensive digital payments. PayPal is investing in the future of the digital world by nurturing local innovation and offering resources to tech development, which makes it an active participant in the digital future of this region in this manner.

This bold investment will see PayPal take a central role in helping to shape a more inclusive and connected digital economy, one that helps people bridge the divide between local entrepreneurs and global opportunity, and provide millions with economic empowerment
