This was achieved in the first half of the 10th minute, when striker Geligory Wekesa effortlessly placed the ball past the goalie, sparking off the fans into a frenzy. Although the second half was full of pressure and control by Active FC in the field, they could not break through the strong defensive line formed by Solidarity that remained strong till the last whistle.
Solidarity Boys became county champions and were given the coveted FKF Trans-Nzoia trophy and KSh 300,000 cash. The hard work of the team in defense, precise shooting, and ability to resist pressure reflected how St. Anthony Kitale has remained a source of the best football talent in the region.
The finals were very well attended with a very energetic crowd of fans, coaches, and football lovers on the one hand and very important officials in the county who attended the grand finals. Others that were present included Trans-Nzoia County Sports Executive Eluid Tormoi, County Director of Sports Jane Wachwenge and FKF Trans-Nzoia Branch Chairman Isaac Munene Kuria. Their presence indicated the increased interest of the county in the development of grassroots football and offering young players an opportunity to shine.
During the women final, Sinyereri Ladies (Wiyeta Girls) showed pure domination and flair beating Dolphine Queens (Kwanza Girls) 5 goals to 1 in a one-sided match. The champions were technically brilliant, fast and team players during the game.
Charity Muhevi was at the forefront with an excellent brace and Ever Passion Ayuma, Filia Khayesi and Loice Adeti were also part of the goal tally. Dolphine Queens controlled a consolation goal on Ruth Nyongesa who completed a smart pass by Shanley Nekesa.
Sinyereri Ladies won the women league trophy and they were awarded with KSh 100,000 cash prize as a reward to their outstanding performance. The FKF Trans-Nzoia Women league with 14 teams in two pools played between June and August and the two best teams in each pool took to the semi-finals.
Although the defeat occurred, the head coach of Dolphine Queens Ruth Nyongesa praised her players because of their determination and efforts. The girls had tried their level best and we simply were unlucky today. This will give us experience to restructure and be back bigger the following season, she said when we were through with the match.
Branch chairman of FKF Trans-Nzoia Isaac Munene was proud to talk of the success of the tournaments stating that standards of discipline, organization and upcoming talent were very high throughout the season. This year’s title has revealed the fact that Trans-Nzoia is a county of raw talent. “We are expecting even more sponsors next season including Shabiki.com and making the next season even bigger and better.” He added that this is aimed at recruiting scouts and providing more opportunities to these young players.
The pulsating twin-header was more than a glorification of the achievements of Solidarity Boys and Sinyereri Ladies, but it is also a reminder of the increasing power of the grassroots football in Trans-Nzoia County. As the support of the local leaders, coaches, and fans grows, the county is gaining more and more strength as one of the most promising footballing areas of Kenya, where passion and future stars collide.
